Behind the song

Liner Notes

Except a Single One explores how social media, online echo chambers, internet forums, and influential podcasters can turn lonely, impressionable young men toward misogyny.

A sixteen-year-old boy goes online looking for friendship, affection, and answers. Instead, he encounters strangers who validate his frustrations, feed his grievances, and convince him that women are responsible for everything missing from his life.

The tragedy is that he begins to believe he understands women without ever taking the time to know one. He went looking for connection and found an ideology that makes genuine connection increasingly impossible.

“You know everything about women, except a single one.”

Words & meaning

Lyrics

Lyrics by Douglas Petercsak

Friday night, just sixteen He stares into a screen Not quite a boy, not yet a man And no one tells him what that means

He asks a hundred strangers If there's something wrong with him They tell him he's the victim And the girls are all to blame

They give his disappointment names They give his anger somewhere to go He came online to find a friend They gave him someone to blame

You know everything about women Except a single one You take the word of strangers Over anyone you've known

You know everything about women Before we've had our say You went looking for affection They taught you hate instead

Now every smile's a strategy Every no's another crime She's a number on a ranking Before she's said a single line

He tells her how her mind works She tells him that he's wrong He says that's what you all say She's already moving on

He tells the strangers everything They tell him he's been used And every time she walks away There's one more thing to prove

You know everything about women Except a single one You take the word of strangers Over anyone you've known

You know everything about women Before we've had our say You went looking for affection They taught you hate instead

She checks the street behind her He checks his phone again A hundred strangers tell him That the fault belongs to women

And somewhere in the silence Before another message comes There's a boy who wanted someone Who's learning to hate everyone

You know everything about women Except a single one You take the word of strangers Over anyone you've known

You know everything about women But what have you become? You went looking for affection They taught you hate instead

What have you become?

What have you become?
